Remembering Forrest

Please enjoy this wonderful article and video tribute by The Royal Conservatory of Music.

Piano Magazine, Clavier Companion offered this beautiful video tribute.

For those of you who missed meeting Forrest or taking a workshop with him, this short video will give you a glimpse of his delight in helping teachers improvise.

Andrea Rackl, Forrest’s duet partner, presents, “The Forrest Kinney Collection: Putting his Strategies to Work for You!” She shared this overview, with wonderful examples of her students using Forrest’s creative approach, at Paula Dreyer’s Piano Connect 2022.

This fun video shows a sample of Forrest and his duet partner Andrea doing what they did best: sharing the Four Arts of Music through creative compositions, fresh arrangements, inspiring interpretations, and amazing improvisations. Warning: the joy is highly contagious!

Natalie Riggs, a former student, wrote this heartfelt, creatively crafted song for Forrest and describes the impact his lessons and mentorship made on her life and career choice.

California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT) Santa Clara Valley Chapter presented The Four Arts Concert — A Tribute to Forrest Kinney.

This December 2020 virtual concert includes performances in the Four Arts of Music by Paula Dreyer, Dr. Kevin Helppie, Wendi Kirby, Grant Kondo, Laetitia Lehman-Pearsall, Natalia Pressman, Julie Poklewski, Andrea Rackl, and Leila Viss, along with memories, stories, and a few words from Anne Reese and Sydney Wallace of Forrest Kinney Publications.

Forrest made a pilgrimage trip to Europe in 2017 to visit the home cities of his favorite composers. A bonus was seeing his childhood friend, Gordon Raphael, in Berlin.
Gordon, a musician and music producer,  took Forrest and jazz pianist Anna Von Raison to a studio to “play.” Thank you Gordon for kindly sharing these recordings of Forrest improvising, and taking us all somewhere over the rainbow with him.

In January 2021, Paula Dreyer produced “Piano Connect – Creative Piano Pedagogy Conference” in honor of Forrest, which included a tribute where friends and colleagues shared stories and music dedicated to him. Enjoy Paula’s original composition, Forrest in the Forrest with Ballet 5:8, choreographed by Kevin Jenkins; Bradley Sowash’s performance of Over the Rainbow; Laetitia Lehman-Pearsall’s original, Tribute to Forrest; and Andrea Rackl’s free improvisation.

We will continue to add to this page soon, so please check back.

Thank you — Forrest Kinney Publications
